CSM Karl E. Schmitt joined the Army in 1985 as a Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic. He attended Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Dix, New Jersey. His follow on assignments include; 1/72 Armor, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Casey, Korea; 21st EVAC, 13th COSCOM, Fort Hood, Texas; Charlie Company 5th Engineer Combat Heavy Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; 565th Ordnance Company, Pirmasens and Crailsheim Germany; S&T Troop Support Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Bliss, Texas; Delta Company, 4-10th Infantry, Delta 1-48th Infantry Dragoons, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Libby NCOA Academy Drill Sergeant School, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Bravo Company 57th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade Fort Hood, Texas; 602nd Maintenance Company 553 Corps Support Battalion, 64th Corps Support Group, 13th COSCOM, Fort Hood, Texas; 602nd Maintenance Company, 142nd CSB, 3rd COSCOM, IRAQ; International Students Division, United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, Fort Bliss, Texas; Special Troops Battalion, 3rd COSCOM, Wiesbaden Germany; Brigade Task Force Warrior, Camp Buehring, Kuwait; 187 Ordnance Battalion, and the 171st Infantry Brigade, Fort Jackson South Carolina. Currently, he serves as the IMCOM Pacific Region Command Sergeant Major, Fort Shafter Hawaii.

CSM Schmitt has held all leadership positions, which include Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Basic Training Drill Sergeant, Drill Sergeant Instructor at the United States Army Drill Sergeant Academy, First Sergeant, Battalion Command Sergeant Major, Brigade Command Sergeant Major and Brigade Task Force Command Sergeant Major.

His military education includes the Equal Opportunity Leaders Course, NBC Officer/NCO Course, Unit Fitness Trainers Course, Reenlistment & Retention Course, Unit Maintenance Operations and Management Course, Drill Sergeant School, Drill Sergeant Instructor Course, Battle Staff, and First Sergeant Course. CSM Schmitt is a graduate of the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy (Class 54) and a graduate of the Command Sergeants Major Course (Class 04-04).

His awards and decorations include: the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star (1 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), Army Commendation Medal (6th Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Achievement Medal (9th oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal (6th award), National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star device, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon (4), Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Ribbon (3), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Army Meritorious Unit Commendation (1 OLC), Drill Sergeant Badge, and Expert Mechanics Badge. He is a member of the Honorable Order of the Samuel Sharp and a member of the Order of the Spur from the 3rd ACR and 64th CSG.
